The best tip anybody can give when training your dog is to be consistent. Consistency is the key to a well behaved dog. Dogs have emotions and feelings and we need to understand that if we want to have a well behaved dog we need to help the dog understand his/her place in our home with love, affection, and correction.
Here are some key points to remember when attempting to train your dog:
Repetition is vital to a dogs growth.
Your dog should respond quicker and more accurately when you maintain an assertive approach. The less assertive you are the more your dog will try to take advantage of you.
Your dog is not an equal:
It doesn't help your dog if you treat it like a child or an equal member of the family. Your dog will act spoiled and disruptive. In order to get good results out of your training your dog needs to understand that you are boss and the leader of the pack.
Do not reward unwanted behavior with attention:
When your dog is jumping on you and displaying behavior that is not wanted you need to remember grabbing him and hugging him and receiving kisses at this point is a recipe for bad behavior. Your dog needs to learn that you love him regardless of if he jumps on you and you can accomplish this with rewarding him by being patient and obedient.
These are some tips to help with general obedience training. We can all teach our dog to do tricks like sit, stay, down, quiet and come, but when it comes right down to it we ultimately want to train our dog to be obedient.
